Dark circles, bags and swelling around the eyes
Written by Gilles Deweer
Dark circles are described as a "shadow" in the lower orbicularis oculi region. If they first appear in the corner of the eye, it's because blood circulation begins at the inner corner. These can stem from facial structure (a thin person with a bony face) or be due to racial or innate factors (dark skin with a natural concentration of melanin pigments).

FATIGUE, STRESS AND ILLNESS
Fatigue, stress, and illness can lead to changes in the tone of the lymphatic vessels, which reflexively contract according to individual sensitivity. Drainage is impaired, blood stagnates in the dilated vessels, and the skin reveals bluish discoloration. In extreme cases, blood pigments can migrate into the interstitial tissue, causing more persistent skin discoloration. In all cases, it is necessary to tone the vascular walls, drain the lymphatic system, and revitalize the eyelids.
Puffiness and swelling under the eyes
Similar to dark circles, under-eye bags often appear during periods of advanced fatigue. They result from sagging skin, insufficient lymphatic drainage, and the insidious accumulation of water and lipids in the subcutaneous tissues. Before fat cells become permanently fixed in the sagging lower eyelids, it is necessary to drain, reduce fluid retention, and also hydrate and firm the skin.
Eyelid swelling is due to impaired lymphatic microcirculation around the eyes. The lymphatic vessels' micro-pump system is much more efficient during the day thanks to the thousands of eyelid blinks. This system slows down at night because the eyelids are immobile. Furthermore, it becomes overloaded by the accumulation of waste products (water, salt, and poorly eliminated alcohol). The tissues then become distended, leading to the characteristic swelling seen upon waking in the morning.
To avoid them, adopt a healthy lifestyle with sufficient sleep. They appear very quickly in an area where the skin is thin, often dry, and subjected to countless movements, given that it is practically devoid of sebaceous glands.

DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
There are different types of dark circles. It is important to differentiate between them in order to better combat them.
- Dark blue/vascular circles.
They are caused by a dysfunction of the blood and lymphatic circulation. Consequently, a mass of blood pigments forms under the thinnest layers of the skin.
Skin aging weakens the microcirculation of the lower eyelid. The blood capillaries, which are composed of collagen, loosen, causing a decrease in blood flow, which leads to the appearance of pigments on the eyelids.
- Dark brown to brown/pigmented under-eye circles
Their causes are numerous: genetic predispositions, computer screens, UV rays...
The epidermis and dermis of the lower eyelid are extremely thin (0.5 mm thick). Consequently, the skin is translucent, making excess pigment, particularly melanin, visible to the naked eye.
- Hollow under-eye circles
They are the result of the loss of fat located between the skin and the bone around the eye. It is the orbital bone, visible through the skin, that gives the lower eyelid its colored appearance.
